Original Barrel Monster, Joe Carnevale
If you are like us, you were amazed in early June 2009 when you first saw photos of the Barrel Monster, which mysteriously appeared on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh, NC. Guerilla artist and 21-year-old NC State Junior Joe Carnevale (aka U Live You Burn) assembled a far more effective traffic deterrent by rearranging a series of traffic barrels into the now legendary Barrel Monster. Unfortunately, Joe was tracked down, arrested and charged with larceny and damage to property. Reportedly, the charges will be dismissed when Joe completes 50 hours of community service working for Habitat for Humanity. Unlike the Lockerbie bomber, we think Joe's ingenuity and creativity is something to celebrate.

Joe is a native of Indiana who was initially lured to NC State on an Army ROTC scholarship. Joe's dad owns a construction company, so he was raised working in the construction business and has a fondness for tools and cameras. You can't miss Joe's car, which is covered from end to end with beer bottle caps ... see image below:

Below is an excerpt from Joe's website, www.nopromiseofsafety.com about the idea for the Barrel Monster construction: "I couldn't get it out of my head. It's that itch, that need to make real an idea that has rolled around in one's head for days, snowballed itself into a temporary obsession that just has to be satisfied. I arrived in a flash and snatched them up from where they stood on the street. As I threw them into the trunk of the vehicle I had to rough them up some so they would fit. I shoved and beat and mangled them into place and was off before any witnesses knew what had even happened. Later on that night, they stood huddled in the corner of the room, silent. They looked on while I slowly set out the duct tape and plugged in the power drill. Then I pulled out the switchblade and released the cold metal blade. They would never be the same."
